Heavy rain alerts have been issued for Majorca and Ibiza, just hours after Lanzarote was hit with severe flooding. Weather experts warn that Storm Olivier’s effects are more intense than initially predicted, bringing thunderstorms and hail across the islands. Local residents and tourists alike are advised to brace for extreme weather conditions.

Lanzarote was struck by catastrophic flooding over the weekend, with several towns, including Arrecife, submerged in water. The situation led to the declaration of a state of emergency, and the UK Government has issued a travel advisory for Britons heading to the island, citing “unprecedented” weather.

The State Meteorological Agency of Spain (Aemet) has issued a yellow alert for both Ibiza and Majorca, predicting heavy rainfall on Sunday night, April 13, and Monday, April 14. The downpour could deliver up to 20 litres of rain per square meter in just one hour.

Initially, Aemet forecasted only light rainfall and cloudy skies from Storm Olivier. However, the storm quickly intensified, with torrential rain hitting Lanzarote on Wednesday night, April 9. Shocking video footage online showed vehicles being swept from the streets, while homes, businesses, and hotels lost power due to the rising floodwaters.

As the storm continues, Majorca’s southern and eastern regions are expected to face the worst conditions. The rain will spread inland, but weather conditions are predicted to improve by Monday afternoon, lifting the alert.

Despite the expected improvements, some rain will persist between Monday and Wednesday. Temperatures are set to fall on Wednesday, with highs reaching 23°C and lows dipping to 14°C. Menorca and Formentera are also under the warning, anticipating heavy rainfall.
