Starting this week, visitors heading to Venice’s historic center will face a new entry fee—alongside the risk of a hefty fine of up to £256 if they fail to comply.

If you’re planning a day trip to the famed floating city this Easter or during the summer months, be aware of Venice’s latest crowd-control measure. From Friday, April 18, 2025, a revised access fee is in force, particularly targeting last-minute travelers. Those purchasing entry fewer than four days before their visit will now pay €10 (around £8.50), a significant jump from the previous €5 (about £4.27).

The fee applies between 8:30 am and 4:00 pm during select periods. In April, it’s enforced daily from the 18th through the 30th. In May, it will be required from May 1 to May 4 and every Friday to Sunday thereafter. In June and July, the charge continues on weekends, plus Monday, June 2.

This policy doubles the number of chargeable days compared to last year. Visitors caught without proof of payment at designated checkpoints could be fined between €50 and €300 (£42 to £256).

An early-bird incentive remains in place—visitors who book at least four days in advance will still be able to access Venice at the reduced €5 rate. Those who wait until three days or fewer before arrival must pay the full €10.

Certain zones remain exempt from the fee, including Ponte della Libertà, Tronchetto Island, Santa Lucia Train Station, and areas immediately linked to Piazzale Roma and San Basilio Station—as long as tourists don’t cross into the historic core. Those headed to the smaller islands of the Venetian lagoon are also not affected.

Overnight guests staying within Venice’s historic center are exempt as they already pay a separate accommodation tax.

Fee enforcement dates from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm are as follows:
